Snapchat+ Subscribers Can Now Access Snapchat on the Web

Snap launched a web-based version of its messaging app today, providing a new way to use Snapchat.

Snapchat for Web (Opens in a new window) brings the Snapchat interface to the desktop, as well as messaging, voice, and video calls. That means you’ll be able to start a Snapchat conversation on your smartphone and then continue it when you sit down to use your laptop or desktop PC.

Snapchat for Web will initially be available only to Snapchat+ subscribers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. According to TechCrunch(Opens in a new window), it will be available to subscribers in France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates shortly after launch, followed by global availability. There are no details on when or if users who do not subscribe to Snapchat+ will gain access.

To access Snapchat for Web, go to web.snapchat.com, and Snap says you must use Google’s Chrome browser. I’d be surprised if it didn’t work with other browsers, particularly those that share the Chromium codebase (e.g. Microsoft Edge, Opera). Entering your Snapchat username and password, followed by a two-step verification process using your phone, is required to gain access.

Web-based messaging already supports chat reactions and chat replies, with support for Lenses on video calls on the way. Video and voice calls should also work without the need for any additional software to be installed on your web browser. And whoever is present will know you’re using Snapchat for Web because Snap has added a laptop to your Bitmoji.
